It’s water under the bridge. Unless it isn’t. In which case you’re under arrest.

According to the latest report from the RNC, two males were arrested this morning for throwing rocks off the Pearltown Road overpass and striking two vehicles passing underneath along Pitts Memorial Drive, one of which was a cop car.

The icing on the cake is that while one of the males is a youth, the other, who turned 18 at midnight, is considered an adult.

Welcome to adulthood, dude.

I wonder if these were the same wunderkind who were responsible for throwing the picnic table off the bridge at Bowring Park, seen here Monday morning, July 12th.

A bridge not too far. Click to enlarge.

Whoever or whatever did this tore their way through most of the park, leaving a trail of busted up picnic tables and scattered garbage behind them.

I mean, wow. They sure showed the park custodians who’s boss.

If you see this man, call the police

New drug in town is both illegal and dangerous

Mephedrone, the latest drug craze on the UK party scene, has arrived in St. John’s, as evidenced by an RNC seizure of the controlled substance yesterday.

Skeletal formula of mephedrone, via Wikipedia.

In the UK mephedrone is legal, sold most often as plant food by online retailers, though that loophole probably won’t last for long. People are reportedly being hospitalized and even dying from taking the drug, which has been banned in Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Sweden and the Channel Island of Jersey, according to a March 18 article from the Globe and Mail.

In the same article, Erin Beasly of the Canadian Centre for Substance Abuse in Ottawa makes a prediction that was perhaps too conservative on mephedrone’s arrival in Canada.

“If it’s seen in Europe then we will see it over here in the next six months,” Ms. Beasley said. “Something that’s cheaper and more effective than ecstasy or cocaine as a stimulant or euphoriant – I suspect it will catch on.”

Try three months.

Despite what some people think, mephedrone is viewed as a controlled substance by Health Canada.

I caught the end of a story on the radio this morning stating that the new chief of the RNC would like to see closed circuit cameras installed in George Street to fight crime.

The growing unruliness on George Street, fuelled by the flood of easy to obtain narcotics, has been making a lot of news lately.  But, are closed circuit cameras really the best way to deal with this issue?

With the exception of a scattered patrol car rolling down George Street, with the b’ys in blue warming the seats with their arses, there is next to no police presence in the downtown entertainment district.  If the issue of violence is as bad as the media and RNC would lead us to believe, why are there no foot patrols on the street?

Having the RNC walk up and down the street at night, ears open and looking into the countless alleys seems like the logical way to get a handle on the seedy activity going on downtown, or am I completely out to lunch?

CBC and the RCMP/RNC: I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine.

Today’s story on CBC.ca about the plague of dealer-on-dealer drug crime in Gotham City St. John’s reeks of PR-serving, headline-grabbing BS.

It contains no actual news, no story, just a bunch of quotes from cops and lawyers about how out-of-whack the illegale drug trade is getting now that dealers have started turning on each other en masse.

I mean, get a load of their weapons!

If this had followed a report on something that actually happened, an instance of such a case that the CBC themselves had investigated, I would see the need. But the entire report is in response to nothing other than whatever information the RCMP and RNC have decided to disseminate. A lot of which amounts to, “well, crimes like these are rarely reported, but we know.”

It’s like ambulance chasing without the actual ambulance. Just reports on how loud the sirens were.

MUN, VOCM and CBC are all over the recent arrest of three 20-something guys and a 17 year old gal. They’re accused of stealing laptops from the library.

I had to laugh at CBC’s Television coverage. Just watch for 20 seconds and you’ll see what I mean as their writers nail their major demographic. Bonus monocle near the end.

laptop

…anyway, Charges will also be laid against some of the people who purchased the stolen laptops. Knowingly having stolen property worth less than $5,000 is a summary offense.

The really sad part is, a student’s computer is their life at this time of year. All this coverage probably dissuades would-be crooks from ruining someone’s academic career. I can get behind that. This incident demonstrates that sketchy b’ys are not hard to track down on a campus with closed circuit TV cameras everywhere.

Good job, RNC/CEP.
